MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. n SOME DECISIVE WINS. The weather conditions were ideal for the first of the Manawatu Hockey Association’s championship matches, on Saturday. At Hokowhitu, the ground was very soft ; after the recent rain, but nevertheless the hockey was of a fairly high standard for the first of the championship games. A feature was the decisive'margins by which the majority of games were won. In the senior divisions, one team notched 7 goals, two teams six goals, each, and one team five goals. A new club in this season’s competitions is the Oliakea Air Force eleven, which, judging by its display on Saturday, will be hard to beat. THE SCORE BOARD. SENIOR A. ' ' United Sports .6 v. Woodville 0. ’Varsity 6 v. Phoenix 1. Air Force 2 v. Broadway 1. SENIOR B. High School 7 v. Woodville 1. United Sports 5 v. ’Varsity 0. Broadway a bye. JUNIOR. Broadway 2 v. Phoenix 0. High School won by default from United Sports; SENIOR A. Fast open hockey was seen in the Air Force v. Broadway match. Showing a splendid attacking combination, Air . Force were always dangerous, Hickey, who scored both of his team’s goals being the spearhead of practically every front-line movement. Broadway, _ although lacking the. front line combination; of their opponents, played a determined game, jhe honours of the match woind probably have been reversed but for the many spectacular saves made by Saul, the Air Force goalkeeper. Broadway’s only goal was scored by A. Hodge after some determined following through in the goal , month. The umpires were Messrs R. Hoare and R. H. Irwin. Woodville were no match for the United Sports eleven. The plav was completely dominated by the United team in the first half, but in the second hard hitting by the Woodville forwards broke up their opponents’ dangerous combination. Nertfit plaved a determined °anje for United, scoring four of h’s side’s coals. Other scorers were Bennett and O’Sullivan. C. Hart, as goalkeeper, made several brilliant scores l)v running cut to meet the Woodville attackers. The umpires were Messrs L. Martin and W. H. Wilson The final score of 6 goals lo 1 in favour of ’Varsify was no indication of the nature of the plav in their match against Phoenix, at Massev College. But for the plav of H. Laury ’Varsity would ' not lmve registered such a decisive win. Both teams made much use of p forward combination but the Phoen : x side jurt lacked Ihe necessary finish. For ’Varsity. H. i Hopewell scored three opals, R. Laury two and J. 'Rutherford one. N. Don-iii'F-mi s n nred for Phoenix. Messrs D. Wilton and M. T-"w acted as umpires. SENIOR B. High School, fielding an cxceotionnlly strong team, pbiyed snlendid hockey to beat Woodville by 7 goals to 1 in the senior B division. N. Anderson plaved well for High School, scoring three of bis side’s goals. Other scorers were Mummery, Waters, Adcock and Ivyle. Loach scored Woodville’s on'v goal. The umpires were Messrs V. Turner and B. Palenski. Having the territorial advantage for practically the whole, of the game, United• Sports were able to notch 5 goals in their match against ’Varsity, who [ailed to score. But for wild hitting by the United forwards, tlie final score would have been even more onesided. United’s goals came from Tester (3), I. Oliver and A. Whitelaw. Messrs D. Hoare and B. Palenski were the umpires. JUNIOR. Broadway beat Phoenix by 2 goals to nil in a fast open game. Broadways coals were scored hv Sykes and M. Dilks. Messrs R... Hoare and I. Bennett were the. umpires.
