PROPER BASIS SOUGHT, “It is impossible to get grading on' a' proper basis.” said the- chairman of tho New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, Mr T A. Duncan, in reply to a question at a mooting of the Marion branch, of the Farmers’ Union, at which he gavo aii addicss covering some of the difficulties being encountered by the board. Suggesting that members of the unions should go to the works and see the sheep graded, Mr Duncan said when the British Government was purchasing the Dominion s meat it Wanted the Down lambs in ono class. In the South Island producers were getting l-16th of a penny less than in the North Island: in the North Island anything below a certain standard was being cut out altogether. ■ The apparent failure of the board to find new markets was explained by < ’.Mi Duncan. He said the board had always endeavoured to extend its operations wherever possible, and any offers that had como from other countries had received favourable consideration. XM only country that offered possibilities tornew trade was Canada, and meat that had been shipped there had shown a profit. The lack of shipping due to the war, however was a great stumbling-block. Great Britain was the bulwark of tlie Bominion’s trade, it would not be to the advantage of Novv Zealand to open up trade with other countries:
