DETERMINED SPIRIT

DISPLAYED AT HOME. BY-ELECTION POINTERS. UNCHIVALROUS HITLER. (United Press Association-—By Electric I Teiegrapn—Copyright.) (Britisli Official Wireless.) Received May 3. 9,40 a.m. RUGBY, May 2. Commenting' on tlie fact that the candidate who had advocated the vigorous and determined prosecution of the war had polled practically all the votes cast in the Pollock by-election while his opponent, who had advocated peace—which to-day could only mean surrender—received a mere handful, the Times says the spirit seen at the by-elections and, indeed, in all events which can be said to be an indication of public opinion will certainly be proof against any setbacks on the road to victory. “For that journey will not he easy,” says the Tim Cs. “If there had been any chance of a speedy, spectacular victory for us Hitler would never have gone to war. None of the men who in history have been scourges of the world has ever been less chivalrous or more redoubtable. “The Germans can only be defeated by organisation, more efficient production, and a force stronger than their own. The by-elections show how ready the people are to give of their best and utmost in tlie cause which they understand.” The Pollok by-elcetion caused by the death of the Minister of Shipping (Sir John Gilmour) resulted Commander Galbraith (Nat,.) 17,850; John Nicholson (Anti-War), 2401; majority for Galbraith, 15,449. Mr Nicholson forfeited his deposit.
