GENERAL NEWS.
VITAL STATISTICS. Births, deaths and marriages registered at Feilding during April, 1940, are as follow, the figuies for the corresponding month in 1939 being shown in parentheses; Births, 18 (12); deaths, 7 (5); marriages, 11 (5). Shunting Yards. A meeting is called for to-morrow morning at 10.30 o’clock, in the Borough Council Chambers, to receive a report of the committee set up to investigate the proposals for the new shunting yards. Wireless Operator. Air F: Gover, of Feilding, has been posted to Ohakca for training as a wireless operator. A son of Air and Airs iS. A. Gover, he was very keen on sport, notably golf, and in that connection made many friends. Shortage of Houses. In common with other parts of the Dominion,, Feilding is experiencing an acute shortago of houses, and although during the past few years many new dwellings have been erected in the borough, the situation has not eased, and in fact the demand to-day appears to be greater than ever. Those in search of houses arc becoming desperate and to secure a dwelling are prepared to pay high rents in advance to influence the owner to give them possession. Some of the residents requiring houses are prepared to buy, but the difficulty arises of getting tho tenant out. Due to the high cost of materials and the difficulty in securing fittings, building is almost at a standstill now. v W.C.T.U. The Feilding branch of the W.C.T.U. held its monthly meeting in St. Paul’s Hall, Airs B. Spence presiding. Airs S'. Wright led the devotions. “Fret not thyself because of evil-doers. Commit thy way 'unto the Lord” was the theme for a helpful talk. A scientific fact was read. Airs Spence read several extracts on work being done for soldiers in camp. A 6010 by. Airs B. Dewe was much appreciated. An invitation to hear Colonel Alacaulay speak on “Billy Bray” was accepted. Harriers. The following harriers are fo meet on Saturday for a whistle run: U. Lainberton, E. Morris, G. Shirley, R. Shirley, F. Straw-bridge. Petrol Reselling Stations. The petrol reselling stations in Fcilding will observe restricted trading hours as from Alonday, Aluy 6. Details are set out by advertisement in this issue. The trade has delayed making this change until the winter months, and it is hoped that the motoring public will appreciate that the reduction of hours is an inevitable sequence of petrol economy.
