SEASON’S RETURNS. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2. Payment of' £78,321 will be made to Canterbury farmers as the result of the fifth and filial main wool appraisal for the province this season. The offering was of only 5047 bales, and was considerably the smallest for the season. The total number of bales sold under the appraisal scheme was 85,770, of a gross value of £1,455,330, or just under £l7 a bale. Last year 99,209 bales wore sold at a total of £1,255,095, so that this year (he return from 13.439 bales fewer has been greater by £200,235. Final figures for the fifth appraisal were announced to-day by the secretary of the Christchurch Woolnrokers’ Association: Weight (lb), 1.582,603; value, £78,320; average price (a lb), 11.887 d; a bale, £ls 10s 4.381 d. The following table gives a comparison of figures for this and last season: Bales sold. 1939, 99,209. 1940, 85,770; total realisation, 1939, £1,255.095, 1940, £1.455,330; average a bale, 1939, £l3 0s 7d, 1940, £l6 19s 2d.
