AUCKLAND BY-ELECTION.
LIBERAL PARTY WITHDRAWS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 2. The by-election to fill the vacant seat in Auckland West, created by the death of Mr Savage, will not be contested by the New Zealand Liberal Party, and the nomination of its official candidate, Mr J. B. Kennedy, will be withdrawn. Official reasons held that New Zealand’s first duty was to give Britain her maximum support in the war and the Government was urged to discharge its full responsibility by positive efforts and by abstaining ■from contentions domestic legislation that -would provoke dissension while the Empire is at war. It was resolved that, with a view to assisting the Government in its task, all political parties should be urged to observe a wartime truce in mere domestic issues and. concentrate on the nation’s war sacrifice.
