CLAIMS FOR DEFENCE.
LONDON. Alay 1. Mr D. N. Pritt, K.C., M.P., opening for the defence, in the case in which Sir AValter Citrine and six members of the General Co.uncil of the Trades Union Congress are suing E. R. Pountney, proprietor of file Daily AVorker, for damages for alleged libel, said the case was important because it involved the serious-question whether use of the law of -libel endangered the right of the Press or anyone else to utter legitimate criticism. Communists, lie said, claimed they were consistently a strongly anti-Fascist party and sincerely desired to get rid of Hitler and Hitler’s Fascism, but they did not think this possible by carrying on the war. The Communists believed the detestable regime in' Germany could be defeated only from inside. Mr Pritt submitted that the articles in the Daily Worker referring to plaintiff-;’ visit to France to inaugurate the Anglo-French. Trade Union Council were fair comment.
