EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” MAY 3, 1910. A large amount of damage had been done at Kobe when a powder hulk containing 3000 cases of dynamite, 50 cases of detonators, and 2300 cases of gelignite, had caught fire and - exploded. All the windows in the foreign section of the town were broken. Oulv two men lost their lives when the Otira tunnel collapsed at the Bealey end. Most of the men had been released but two still remained trapped in the tunnel. They could be heard tapping on a water-pipe so it was considered they were safe. Cabinet had decided to make a grant of £SOO as compensation to the widow of the late Sergeant Maguire, who was shot in Palmerston North wffiile in the execution of his duty. Lord Islington, the new GovernorGeneral of New Zealand, had left England for his new post. The keel of the new 26,000-ton battlecruiser Princess Royal, 700 ft long, carrying eight 12in guns, and with- a speed of 30 knots, had been laid at Barrow.
