THIRTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” MAY 2, 1910. R. Arnst, the world’s champion sculler, had performed very well at the Parramatta (Sydney) championships. Rowing off scratch he dead-heated for first place with G. Matterson (46 seconds) in the third heat. The vital statistics for April for Palmerston North were:—Births, 40; deaths, 14; marriages 22. The Bealey end of the Otira tunnel had collapsed, entombing a number of workmen. A search party was also entombed when a further fall cut off their retreat. A later message stated that a number of the men were injured. A London report stated that Mr Cecil Grace had flown an aeroplane at Sheerness 50 miles and had covered the distance in 51 minutes. When M. Paulham returned to Paris after winning the Daily Mail’s £IO,OOO prize for flying from London to Manchester he received a great ovation and was carried shoulder high to the Gare du Nord.
