The Government, as a precautionary measure, is diverting British shipping'from the Mediterranean. The Associated Press learns on the most reliable authority that the precautions have been taken because of the character of pronouncements by responsible Italians, also the attitude of, the Italian Press. Britain does not intend to continue- tlie precautions longer than is necessary.
“Air Menzics must bring his ideas up-to-date,” says the Giornalc d’ltalia condemning the references by the Prime Minister of Australia (Mr It. G. Menzics) to Italy as a neutral.
“Italy is not a neutral. She is allied to Germany. Slia has her own interests to defend and is reconstructed and organised to defend them vigorously. .“.Italy is determined to fight for her liberty in the Mediterranean,” declares the paper. The Vittorio Veneto is the first of four new battleships to be put into active, service. A sister ship, the Littorio, is expected to be in service soon.
