OCCUPIED BY JAPAN. Received May 1, 10.35 a.m. . LISBON, April 30. It is officially stated that a clash occurred at Macao between Japanese troops and tlio local police after the Japanese occupied the island, the ownership of which has long been disputed between Portugal and China. Portugal is protesting to Japan.

Macao is a Portuguese colony in China at tlio southern extremity of tlio Canton River delta, 40 miles south-west of Hong Kong, 'tho area, including the islands of Taipa and Coloane, is about 10 square miles. The Portuguese settled (here in 1557 and paid tribute to China until 1849. lu 1807. Chinn formally acknowledged Portuguese sovereignty. The Chinese, however, have since claimed ownership; Mucuo’s population is about 158,000, of whom 152,000 are Chinese.
