Mr P. A. Milverton, superintendent of the Palmerston North’ Fire Brigade, has left on his annual leave and will ho away for a month. Sir Louis Barnett, Otago district surgeon of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, has been appointed surgeon-in-chief for the Dominion in succession to Dr C. D. Henry, who has resigned because of ill-health and lias been transferred to the reserve. Messrs C. E. Vile and B. E. Keiller, president and senior vice-president, respectively, of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, have returned from a visit to Wellington, where they have been investigating entertainment features for the Winter Show. The'friends of Mr John Permain will regret to learn that he has been confined to his bed through illness since Sunday. At the suggestion of the vicar, Rev. F. S. Ramson, at the annual meeting of parishioners of St. Peter’s Chuich, Terrace End, last evening, it was decided to send Mr Permain a letter expressing the best wishes of parishioners for his early recovery. V Appreciative reference of the work of Sir William Hunt, who passed away in September, 1939, and who . was honorary treasurer of the Royal Agricultural Society, is contained in the annual report of the society, to be presented by the president (Mr L. J. Wild, of Feilding). “As a life governor and honorary treasurer/of this society his assistance had been invaluable, especially because of his influence in securing financial support for the Royal Show,” the report says. At a gathering in Wellington, last evening, Mr J. H. Hall, who is very well-known throughout the journalistic profession, and was until recently deputy-censor, was presented with an engraved wristlet watch by the president of the New Zealand Journalistic Association (Mr A. Hardcastle) prior to his departure abroad as war correspondent. Hon. D. G. Sullivan (Minister of Industries and Commerce) and Mr J. T. Paul (Chief Censor) were among those present. ■- Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs P. J. Murphy, of Riverlea, Taranaki, from the Under-Secretary of State to the Air Ministry, London, that their sou, Pilot-Officer John Dawson Murphy, has been posted missing on active service. He is the younger son of the family, who had their early upbringing during the time their parents were host and hostess at the Dawson Falls Hostel, Mount Egmont. His sisters, Misses P. and J. Murphy reside.in Palmerston North. All the members of the family are well-known alpine enthusiasts. One of the • best-known residents of the Okaiawa district, Mr Jacob Emil Meuli, died on Monday at a Palmerston North private, hospital. Returning from a holiday spent in Wellington, Mr Meuli stopped at Awapuni for the first day of tlie. Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting. It was there that he suffered a sudden illness which later resulted in his death. He was a former director of the Joll Cooperative Dairy Company. His interests ill racing extended to the joint ownership with Mr O. Cox, of Hawera, of two horses in training. Kilometre and Lickem. Mr Meuli was predeceased by his wife five years ago. *••
