MANAWATU NOMINATIONS.
WINTER MEETING. GOOD STEEPLECHASE FIELD. , Nominations for the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter mooting to be held on May 16 and 18 closed last evening, and there has been a good response by owners and trainers. The total list falls short of last year's, but there is a proportionate improvement in the nominations for the :jumpers’ events. The total last year was 368 (184 for each day) and this year the total is 340 (163 first day and 177 second). Hie number of jumping events has been reduced, there being one less hurdle race and one less steeplechase this year. The two hurdles races have attracted 43 nominations, compared with 44 for three races last, year, ami me two steeplechases 38 nominations, compared with 39 for three steeplechases last year. The Manawatu Steeplechase lias drawn 17 entries, comparod with 13 last year, and the Akitio Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase has drawn 21, compared with 13 last year. The Ngata Hurdles has a good nomination of 26, against 16 last year, and 17. compared with 13, have entered for the Rangitira Hurdles. The entries for the open fiat events are fewer. Hacks are better catered for this year, and will have six flat events, compared witli four last year, nnd these, including the gentlemen riders’ race, have attracted in all 136 entries, compared with 123 for the corresponding four races last year.
