EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 29, 1940. In the Mayoralty elections in Feildmg, Mr Edmund Goodbehere had been the successful candidate. Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P., was elected Mayor of Wellington. Mount Ngauruhoe was reported to he active, large clouds of black smoke having been seen coming from the crater. That early strawberries will return a huge profit was exemplified at -Clyde (Central Otago) when a man made £6O from a square chain bed of plants. Lord Kitchener had returned to England after his visit to Australia and New Zealand. When interviewed regarding the colonies, he said that the people were keen to nut defence questions on a sound footing.
