CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW

FINE DISPLAY SEEN. PALAIERSTON NORTH SOCIETY. The annual Chrysanthemum Show held by the Palmerston North Horticultural Society on Saturday was one of the most successful yet recorded by the organisation. Twcnty-lour blooms wore exhibited by each side in a competition between Palmerston North and Wanganui Chrysanthemum Clubs. This was won by Palmerston North by 187 J points j to 1784. The points were made up as follow:—Palmerston North: Senior 94; junior. 93-1; total, 1874. Wanganui: I Senior, '894 ; junior,- 894 ; total, 179. | From this competition came the I champion bloom in the show, a Hilda Voale variety, exhibited by H. B. Shailer, which also won the certificate for the best pink bloom in the Chrysanthemum Club's section. In shade it was a very pale pink, and was a wonderfully well grown and very large bloom. The award for the champion of the Chrysanthemum Club was made to J. Shearman (Palmerston North) lor a William Turner. This was' a white bloom of beautiful texture and purity, and was remarkable for its even shape. Air Shearman also won the Milos Alcmorial Trophy for the best white flower in the Chrysanthemum Club display. Other Chrysanthemum Club awards were as follow:—Best yellow, W. L. Chapman (an R. C. Pulling) ; best bronze, AI. Childs (Russell Clarke) ; best dark, C. J. Erenstrom (Hugh Alitchell). The best bloom i.ti the open class was exhibited by A. Hixon and Won. This was a Bessie Cook variety, a mauve flower which was very even and extremely fresh. It was beautifully shaped. This variety grows very well in this district. Airs J. B. Alorgan, of Palmerston North, was awarded the championship in the amateur section for a specimen of the old-established AVilliam Turner variety. This was a very fresh bloom, and remarkable for its snowy whiteness. One of the host amateur blooms was a J. S. Lloycl yellow, exhibited by J. H. Cooper in a class for three blooms. The other two were not up to the standard of this bloom, and the exhibit gained only second prize in the section. Among fairly new varieties seen were some Clara Truman blooms, a bronze with a deep bloom and good shoulder, and specimens of Remus, an English rose-pink chrysanthemum. One of the best blooms in cultivation, Hugh Mitchell, was exhibited in the Chrysanthemum Club display. This is not a new variety. The show was opened by the patron (ALr J. A. Nash), who was introduced bv the chairman of the committee (Mr A. AY. Just). Air Nash said that the exhibits reflected very great credit on tbc growers, and the show was one of the best held in Palmerston North so far. The lovely blooms on display were sufficient to slipw what the society had done in the past and what it was doing to-day. It encouraged people to take an interest in and cultivate (lowers and thus promoted a love of the beautiful. The Chrysanthemum Club must itlso he congratulated. In every respect it must be very helpful to the society, and the club also appeared to be making good progress. The decorative exhibits, said Air Nash, would hold their own with those in any show in New Zealand; in lact, the same could be said of any of the exhibits. lie concluded by paying a tribute to the work of the chairman, the secretary (Air J. Galland) and the judges. _ For exhibition only, a line display of chrysanthemums was made by Airs E. L. Riddiford, of Lower Hutt.
