YOUNG FARMERS

MANAWATU DISTRICT CLUBS. ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. The annual meeting of delegates to the Manawatu Young Farmers’ Clubs’ District Committee was held last evening, Mr E. W. .Barnett presiding over an attendance of more than fifty delecrates. The chairman said that the large attendance indicated the strong position the movement was in. This proved that the war had not lessened its strength, as some had predicted it would. The report stated that the past year had been notable for the continued forward movement by organisations in this and other districts, despite the general disturbance and uncertainty created by die war, and this district had, without doubt, maintained its reputation of being one of the most active in New Zealand. One more club was formed at Opiki, but they were unfortunate in losing the active club at Woodville to the new district of Southern Hawke’s Bay. The club at Paraparaunui no longer existed. However, there were still 21 clubs in the Manawatu area and the membership had so far increased in these as to cover the loss of members in the two clubs mentioned. The report roterred to the successful tours conducted, debating and shearing competitions, Centennial games as well as the loss sustained through the relinquishing of duties by Mr F. F. Sherwood (committee member) and Mr Chamberlain (secretary). The financial statement showed a balance of just over £3O, due solely to the profit on the Centennial games. In view of the fact that grants from the Government received the year before last were not available this year, the result of the year’s working was satisfactor\ T , but the need for careful planning and economy was stressed, at least until the funds bad been built up to form a satisfactory reserve. The report recorded appreciation of the many helpers who have given their time and energies to the movement. It was decided to support the holding of a dance this year in conjunction with the Manawatu Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Club. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr H. J. Lancaster (Glen Oroua); chairman. Mr R. O. Gloyn (Rongotea); vice-chairman, Mr P. G. Thevcnard (Tvimbolton); secretary, Mr L. Earl (Department of Agriculture) treasurer, Mr P. G. Cope; district executive, active members, Messrs A • C. Lewis (Levin), I. Old (Waituna). W. Howell (Pohangina), H. M. Linklatcr (Pohangina), McGregor Donald (Bu nnj'thorpe), D. Rowland (Kairanga)"; advisory members, Messrs A. Lawson (Kimboiton) and N. P. Nielsen (Kairangu); co-opted members, Messrs A. J. Gal pin (Bunnythorpe), A. C. Buist (Feilding), E. IV. Barnett (Haleombe); delegates to Wellington Provincial Council, -Messrs A. Lawson, R. O. Gloyn and P. G. Thevcnard; auditor. Mr L. I. Pliinmer. A high tribute was paid by speakers to the work for the movement of the retiring president (Mr Barnett), who has held many offices in connection with Young Farmers’ Clubs, including that of Dominion president. A motion of thanks was carried by acclamation. Mr Barnett, in reply, said he had learnt much from his association with the clubs and owed the movement far more than it owed him. He expressed the opinion that it would go on to be the greatest movement in the agricultural history of New Zealand. Similar appreciation was expressed of the work of Mr Chamberlain as secretary, and it was decided to place on Tccord appreciation of his services. The following remits were dealt with : From Rongotea.—“That the sevon-n-side football tournament be held in the middle of .Tune and at the AVinter Show if possible.”-—Referred to the executive. Rangiotu.—“That the club president and secrctarv be presented with a certificate at the end of their year of office as a mark of appreciation.”— Lost. AVhakarongo.—“That consideration be given to the holding of a boxing tournament at the AVinter Show.”— Referred to the executive. AVhakarongo.—“That a swimming tournament be held at a suitable time.” —Referred to executive.
