DIFFICULT YEAR

HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION. SUPPLIES CONSERVED. “The year has been a strenuous one lor most of the board’s staff, especially for the senior institutional officers and the heads of the various departments,” stated the managingsecretary of tlie Palmerston North Hospital Board (Mr A. J. Phillipps) in concluding his rejiort on the estimates to the annual meeting of the board on Wednesday. “Since the war began we have had a considerable quantity of extra work to undertake and, in ' addition, we have been faced. with certain difficulties as regards supplies. The present position is such that, though we liold good stocks of most essential hospital lines, it' is quite uncertain as to whether we will be able to replace many of these lines in tlie next year or two. The position calls for considerable forbearance on the part of all officers in requisitioning supplies and for the exercise of considerable judgment on the part of senior officers responsible for the use of sucli supplies. “No one is desirous of seeing any lowering of present standards, but it is necessary to impress on all concerned the real need under war conditions for exercising tlie greatest care and -the utmost economy in the use of all lines which have to be imported from overseas. In this connection the effort which has been undertaken by the medical superintendent (Mr J. H. North) and the matron (Miss L. XI. Banks) of the Hospital since the war began has already in many directions resulted in substantial savings. I think the board can be assured that the spirit of team-work throughout the board’s institutions is being fostered and developed under war conditions to a greater extent, than at any time previously.”
