. limits OL' 1 searchlights. LONDON. April 8. The authorities arc endeavouring to develop more effective searchlights foi anti-aircraft defence. They point out that searchlights and sound detectors co-operate, and that an aeroplane at a height of 20,000 lest, flying at 200 miles an hour, travels at least a mile before the sound reaches the ground. A considerable time is spent, therefore, in finding and holding the aeroplane bv searchlight before the artillery can fire. “Wo need a light hand, winch inventors, could and should evolve, • to sweep the sky like a broom,an expert said. “When the machines are vaguely outlined, spotlights could pick them up rapidly and concentrate oil litem lor the .artillery. “The sky broom,” lie added, “.should light an 'area, at least 100 time's e-reatcr than the present searchlight’s area, and thereby show up formations searching spotlights rarely get on to more than one machine at a time.”
