NETHERLANDS INDIES
JAPANESE COMPROMISE. NEW YORK, April 16. The Tokio correspondent of the United Press of America says that, according to a reliable informant, the Japanese Government is agreeable to an arrangement by which a number of Powers will protect the Dutch East Indies, provided Japan is assured of a continuation of her economic rights in the Indies. Cargo rates to the Far East have been raised by 50 per cent. Japanese Government bonds have declined six points. The New Y r ork Herald-Tribune points out that Britain’s and the United Stales’ trade interests in the Dutch East Indies exceed Japan’s. It adds: “Since Japan lias been the major disturber of peace in East Apia lor a decade. her claim to the right to extend her polite power southward elicits only derision and resentment from the United States. If she tries to assert naval supremacy on Singapore’s doorstep she will certainly not he long in stumbling into war and forfeiting what little American consideration she still enjoys.”
