HEAVY SHELLING.
. DESTRUCTION OF RUNWAY. R.A.F. HELPS. ' (From Daventrv.) The bombard merit of Stavanger by the British warships is described by the Admiralty as heavy. It can be taken that the Navy’s guns were used just as effectively as they were against the Graf Spee and the German destroyers at Narvik. Jt is highly probable' that the bombardment carried a stage further the smashing up of the runway of the aerodrome, rendering it useless to German aircraft. A machine of the R.A.F. Coastal Command acted as “spotter” for the naval gunners. The pilot said lie reached the aerodrome just as dawn was breaking. Ho dropped a flare which floodlit the area, and then some incendiary bombs which caused fires. This was the signal to the Navy, which
then began shelling.
