KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. At the monthly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean presided. Also present were Clrs. W. P. Shaw, 1). T. Couper, W. G. Clapham, A. S. D’Ath, J. H. Williamson, D. 'Stent, A. E. Shannon and F. E. Tappin. The following motion, moved by the chairman, was passed:—“That this council deeply regrets the passing of tho late Prime Minister, lit. Hon. M. J. Savage'and expresses its appreciation of his sincerity and honesty of purposo in the humanitarian work performed by him during his term of office.” Hon. P. Fraser, Prime Minister, wrote stating that the council’s expression of sympathy in the death of tho late Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. ,T. Savage) was deeply appreciated by his colleagues and himself and it was with grateful thanks that they acknowledged the kindly message which the council had conveyed to them. The Public Works Department advised payment of the following subsidies: Maintenance of main highways to February 29, 1940, £2113 5s 3d; Waipuru Road metalling, £449 12s 3d ; Mangarerc Road metalling, £362 18s Cd. . . The ICairanga County Council forwarded a cheque, for £304 13s lOd, being tho Kiwi ten. Council’s share of the heavy traffic license fees collected for the quarter ended February 29. The Mayor of Fciltling (Mr T. L. Seddon). chairman of Zone 10 Committee, extended an invitation to tho councillors to be present at the ceremony of dedication and unveiling of the district Centennial memorial at Mount Stewart. A letter was received from the Royal Humane SocietyNof New Zealand appealing for a donation towards the work carried out by tho society.—A grant of two guineas was approved. The quarterly report of the health inspector at Marton of the work performed in the county for the quarter ended March 31, 19401 was received. Application was made by Mr N. V. Shannon, of Rowa. for permission _ to erect a telephone line near the Waituna Post Office. Permission was granted under the usual conditions. Permission was sought by the Rnngiwahia Young Farmers’ Club to plant trees on the Pukerimu Road reserve.— Tho council agreed, provided the club supplied information concerning the proposed care of the trees and fences in the future. In his report the overseer said that damage to Atiputa Road .done in the storm of February 24 had been inspected. The extent of the damage was not much and a big filling was the .biggest job where approximately 109 cubic yards of material wore reouired. Traffic' could then use the road in drv weather. All the slips had been shifted on the Kawhatau end and if the filling were put in a car could be driven through the road from end to end. This work should he put in hand at once so that the tractor grader coi'ld be worked through the road before the wet weather set in. The approximate cost of the filling would be about £l3 10s. FINANCIAL POSITION. The bank balances of the council were reported to bo in the following position as at yesterday’s date: County fund account, cr £1216 Is 2d; employees’ accommodation special loan, cr. * £323 5s Id ; Kimbolton Cemetery account, cr, £7 Ss Id; land fund account No. 2. cr. £137 19s; Rangiwahia. Cemetery account, cr. £ll 8s fid; sale of loan assets account, cr. £375; Waituna Cemetery account, cr. £ll 19s 9d. Rates paid and outstanding for the year ended March 31. 1940. wore reported as follow. —General: Paid, £8095 13s 6d; outstanding, £SS 0s ]Oil. Special rates: Paid. £2668 17s Id; outstanding, £27 13s 4d. Hospital rate: Paid. £4317 16s sd; outstanding, £46 13s 2d. Arrears (3 years).—General: Paid, £92 5s fid; outstanding- £97 15s sd. Special rates: Paid. £55 17s 2d; outstanding. £36 Is 9d. Hospital rate • Paid. £43 11s 9d; outstanding, £47 2s 9d.
