WOODVILLE & DISTRICT

PLUNKET SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the AVoodville sub-branch of New Zealand IJlulikel Jlulike t Society was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs li. P. Horne presided over a large attendance. .Prior to the commencement of the business, members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Prime Minister (Rt. Hon M. J. Savage). The president web coined several members from Pabiatua. The seventeenth annual report recorded another successful year both financially and in respect of work accomplished. Though the credit balance had fallen, this was not due to a decline in receipts, but to greater expenditure. The society’s one big effort for the raising of funds—the holding of a street stall—had, thanks to the generosity of all who contributed and patronised it, brought in the satisfactory sum of £24. There had been a marked increase in the number of mothers and babies attending the rooms and it was gratifying to note that 95.2 per cent of the babies born in the district came under the care of the Plunket nurse. No difficulty had been experienced in collecting Wcodville’s quota for the memorial fund for the late Sir Trnbv King and thanks were extended to those who had responded. The report placed on record the committee’s appreciation of Nurse Tinkhnm’s services and the competent and conscientious way in which she had carried out her duties. There were mothers who would not forget how she had trudged through the snow to visit their babies on the worst day of last winter. Thanks were extended to all who had helped the society. The balance-sheet was read by the secre-tary-treasurer (Mrs L. J. AYhittington). Mrs Purdie' said that the committee was to be congratulated on the satisfactory result disclosed in the bal-ance-sheet and the good progress achieved. Mrs Horne said the increase in donations received in the Plunket box was most encouraging and showed that the society’s work was appreciated. She expressed thanks to the secretary, who had completed eight years’ services to the committee in that capacity, for her co-operation and assistance. Reporting on the visit of Dr Helen Deem, medical adviser to the society in New Zealand, and Nurse Fitzgibbons, nursing adviser, on Monday, the president said it was the first occasion on which Woodville had had such a visit and the fact that 32 mothers and babies had met the visitors at the rest room was proof that members were appreciative of their action in coming to Woodville. Mrs Horne appealed to all mothers to become members. This, she said, would help tremendously in the work of the society which, despite other claims on their attention arising out of the war. must not be neglected. It was decided that application be made to the Danncvirkc Hospital Board for a donation. The Woodville County Council is to be asked to renew its grant towards the upkeep ol the rest room. In vacating the chair prior to the election of officers. Mrs Horne thanked members of the Pabiatua branch ioi their assistance.
