PAHIATUA

BUSII RUGBY UNION. At the annual meeting of the Bush Rugby Union, Mr R. J. Smith presided. Messrs 11. Collins and R. McGregor attended as representatives from Woodville. Motions were passed incorporating the Woodvillc Club and Pahiatua Athletic Club in the union. Mr A. F. Cosford stated that Athletic would be entering a third grade team in the competition, 'flic chairman remarked that Woodville had received its clearance from the Manawatu Rugby Union, and was eligible to join the Bush Union. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Air D. Kelly; president, Mr R. J. Smith; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Wolland (South), E. L. Harvey (North) and P. Donovan (Pukctoi); management committee, Messrs G. Morgan (Woodville), M. Reichcnbach, S. Olliver, 11. Cooper, C. Burgess, J. Petersen and M. Smith; schools’ representative, Mr D. R. Salter; Referees’ Association member, Mr W. Lawry; auditor. Mr P. R. Boagey; hon. treasurer. Air O. C. Smyth ; delegate t,o Now Zealand Rugby Union, Mr R. J. Smith. Mr R. A, Williams was elected a life member. Air C. Connell presided at the annual meeting of the Kotiini Football Club. It was decided to nominate a senior team for the competition. Officers elected are: —Patron, Mr T. 11. Verry; president, Mr C. Connell ; vice-presidents, 19 were elected: joint secretaries, Messrs A. Verry and M. Connell; auditor, Mr T. If. Verry; delegates to Bush Rugby Union, Alossrs R. J. Smith and W. Feaeey; club captain, Mr R. Henry; field captain, Air B. Smith. BOROUGH COUNCIL. At a meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council on Monday evening, the AJayor (Air S. K. Siddells) presided. Also present were Crs W. A. Carthow, Cl. 11. Ilodd, S. J. Judd. \V. Hal! Watson, J. W. Greaves, and J. W. Sturton. A motion of sympathy with the Government, and the Labour Party in the deatli of the late Prime Minister was passed. In the course of a review of the Centennial celebrations, the chairman stated that the Governor-General, Lord Galway, had received a very favourable impression of Pahiatua. During a 25-minute drive. Air Siddells declared, Ilis Excellency gained a good idea of what •Pahiatua was like, and confessed himself most pleased. Air Siddells paid a special tribute to the work of the Women’s Division and the Women’s Institutes in providing afternoon tea for the old settlers. He concluded with thanks to those who had co-operated in the display of antiques. Several tributes from the councillors were paid to the Mayor and Mr L. D. Lovelock (town clerk) for their untiring efforts in connection with the celebrations. Cr Hall Watson expressed the thanks of the council and genera] public to tbc members of the Pahiatua Alunicipal Baud. On the suggestion of Cr Carthow. it was decided to keep a record of the Centennial celebrations. A Centennial album, containing records, photographs and documents of all kinds will be included. When speaking of the treasurer’s statement, which showed a credit of £lO4 in the general and rates account. Cr Uodd stated that the council could congratulate it self cn being in such a fortunate position. Describing bow the men had to stand down for a- fortnight after they left the No. 13 scheme and before going on sustenance, the Mayor pointed out that if they earned any money during this period they had to stand down for another fortnight. He said that when unemployed men were put off by any council they had to stand down for a fortnight and if they earned anything during that, period they were not eligible for sustenance. This was in his opinion as outright absurdity. Such anomalies seemed to be attended to in 1 lie cities, but not. in the country. Air 11. F. Poircey was appointed dog tax collector on the same terms as bust year. Rearrangement, of committees due to the resignation of Cr Anoell from the council resulted in the appointment of Cr. Greaves to the works committee and Cr Allan to the hbrary and cemetery committee, NOTES. A number of Red Cross Soriely workers, yesterday, conducted a shop which yielded £2B for' the society’s funds. Afrs IT. Hirst presided a-t. a meeting of the Tvonini Women’s Institute. The potato competition was won by Mrs If. Hirst, with Aliss E. Hirst second. In the monthly conipetifions results wore: —Pikelets, Airs Alillcr 1, Airs Knox 2. The best bloom w T as shown by Atrs Hirst. At a mooting of the St. Paul’s Ladies’ Guild. Airs A. Armstrong presiding, final arrangements were made for the holding of a Scottish fair. Mrs Smith and Mrs Hogg offered to attend to the (lowers in tlie church during next month. At a meeting of the Pahiatua Fire Brigade, Superintendent W. Lawry presided. Tlie Borough Council, in a letter, expressed its appreciation of the high standard of efficiency of the brigade members and extended congratulations to those who participated in the Centennial demonstrations at, Petone. Fireman B. Taylor reported on the United Districts’ Fire Brigades’ Conference he'd at, Upper Huff. The brigade congratulated Superintendent, T awry on his election as vice-president, of the U.D-.F.8. Association. Alossrs R. Rice and ,J. Hutchinson were elected active members of the brigade. Mr G. Ilogg was elected an honorary life member.
