3FAXAWATU ASSOCIATION. The annual report of the ManawatuHockey Association states that;, although the 1939 season lacked the highlights winch tiic Indian visit provided ill the preceding year, it was notable nevertheless lor the steady progress which augurs well for the future of hockey in the Manawatu. Perhaps the most important development was the extension of the association boundaries lo include the counties of Woodvillc. Pahiatua and Akitio, following the disbandment of the Bush Association. Ibis association had greatly strengthened local hockey and a policy of consolidation might well bn developed further with n. view to raising the standard of plnv still higher. It, was with great regret that the report recorded the resignation of Mr Fitzgerald during the past season by reason ot Ins transfer to Wellington, terminating a long association with Manawatu hookey, during which lie rendered inestimable service to the game. He would bo great'y missed by all players and particularly by those members of the executive who had worked with him for many years. A challenge for tho New Zealand Shield was entered during the season and a fixture allocated. Unfortunately it became apparent that it would he impossible to field a fully representative side nnd tlio executive re.-udiintly decided to defer I lie challenge until next, season. Owing to the small number of claims, the receipts for the season exceeded the expenditure bv £6 6s 6d. The amount sl -r ,rling to the credit of this fund is now £177 Is 9d. The report thanks umpires, who ua\e their time and services in the control of matches. It also thanks player-um-pires who assisted the association when members of the Umpires’ Association were not, available. The report also records the results of the- various matches played. Women's S»b-Association.—Four. teams took part in the competitions, winch were played on the Takaro ground. The competition was won l>y T> road wav Gold.
