GERMAN EXPORTS
MAIL CONTRABAND. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. April 13. The Ministry of Economic Warfare reveals interesting figures relating to Nazi endeavours to avoid the British control of German exports by dispatching small but valuable articles through the mails. For practical reasons the mails have r.ot till recently been subjected to a vigorous search, but it has been roticed that such articles as textile needles —which weight for weight are as valuable as silver—quantities of rare drogs, dyestuffs, small precision tools, precious stones and similar articles have been increasingly sent out from Germany by mail. A test applied in December to mail traffic to America revealed that jewellery exported by this means amounted tc 1,000,000 dollars annually and precision tools to 300,000 dollars, while the weight of dyestuffs was as high as 2250,0001 b and chemicals 18,000,000 lb. This traffic to America, it is thought, is being carried on at comparative figures with other countries, and as a result strict control has been instituted over the mails at all Allied contraband bases. Ships of all nationalities have been searched and the procedure is to take the mail off the vessel, and alter examination of the mail place it on the next mail-carrying ship.
