COUNTY COUNCIL
HOROWHENUA AFFAIRS. A meeting of tlio Horowlicinia County Council was liold yesterday, Cr. G. A. Alonk presiding. The other members present were Cl's. L. 11. Rest, J. D. Aitehison, F. J. Ryder, A. M. Atkins, D. K. Guy, A. J. Gimblett, A. AI. Colquhoun, and C. R. Jensen. Prior to the commencement ol the business those present stood in silence in memory of the late Prime Minister (Rt. Hon: M. J. Savage). Cr. Monk stated that it was through his ability at being able to adapt himself to any position that Mr Savage _ had gained the position of Prime Minister. - The Department of Labour asked that suitable work ho made available by the council in order to absorb subsidised labour and this work to occupy these men for at least twelve months. The chairman moved that the letter be considered hv the council when the estimates are lieing framed, and this was agreed to. . , The secretary of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum Board of 'Trustees wrote thanking the council for its donation of £3O, and asking also for an annual donation. —The chairman said that this, as well as many other organisations, would have to reduce its expenditure, and ho said he was of the opinion that last year’s donation should be reduced by 50 per eent. On the chairman’s motion it was decided to donate £ls this year. The secretary of the Shannon 1 School committee advised that the condition of the Buckley Road corner was very dangerous and that a number of accidents to children had been oulv narrowly averted.—Cr. Rest moved that the matter be referred to [the works committee, and this was agreed to. . , . - r r . x A letter was received from Mr G. J. I Wilde who commented upon his increased rates. —The chairman said _ no ( thought thev could assure Mr A A ilde that they would keep the rates down wherever possible in iuture. Costs had risen and so the increase had to bo handed on to the ratepayer, said the chairman. Afrs A. Wikibore advised that a culvert at the entrance of her property had collapsed, and pointed out j danger ol its present condition.—Uic matter was loft to the i ngincer. I Mr S. B. Read, of Kawia Road, [wrote seeking permission to use the l spoil from the western side, of the road to iill up the gap which had developed as the result of recent excavation work at the entrance to his property. — Referred to the engineer. Mr W. Thomas, principal ol the 1 Lorowhenmi College, n rote stating that Tavistock Road was in a very dangerous condition lor the transport of children in ,the school bus.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the works committee and report accordingly. 'The engineer stated the road was in class 1 which allowed the bus -owner to carry up to 4J tons. His bus weighed 4 tons. 'The principal of the college is to be advised regarding the class ol the road. , . Air W. E. Cockeriil wrote asking the council if it would construct an allweather access road to his at latana s Corner on the Eevin-Eoxton highway. He oifered a contribution towards the cost. —The council is to reply stating that it cannot make road improvements on u native reserve. Airs R. V. Sloman and Afr E. J. Watson, of Palmerston North, asked that attention be given to Rua Avenue, Waitarere Beach.—The matter was referred to the engineer.
