DEBATING SOCIETY.
RECESS DECIDED UPON. At the annual meeting of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society Mr H. (J. Mills occupied the chair and, after presenting his report, and the reading of the statement oi accounts by the lion, treasurer (Mr A. C. Philpot). congratulated the society on the completion of the fifth year of act ivities. He stated that the j year had been very successful, and thanks were due to all who had contributed by donating trophies and acting as adjudicators .the officers of the society, and the Press. Special reference was made to the excellent work done by the lion, secretary (Mr H. JKing). It was resolved that, owing to a number of members having joined the Colours, and many others being engaged in patriotic efforts, the society go into recess in the meantime. A strong committee was appointed to j look after the society's interests and, if necessary, to arrange debates, etc., with kindred societies. Mr AY. 13. Tennent did not seek reelection as president, and in recognition of liis valued services Mr T. C. Watson was unanimously elected to that position.
