BOROUGH AFFAIRS. AIEETING OF COUNCIL. At \ the monthly meeting of the Woodville Borough Council, held on Thursday, there were present the Mayor (Air R. It. Johnston) and Crs H. Galbraith, E. J. Harding, C. Forbes, J. T. Horne, A. Olsson and A. H- Mustwick. Cr J. Sullivan was granted leave of absence. The Department of Labour, in reply to the council’s inquiry about labour under scheme No. 13, advised that it could not yet give any mdica--1 tion of the amount of subsidy availI a.ble in this connection.—The Alayor i salid no action could be taken ; they I would simply have to wait lor the I required information. Writing on behalf of the AYoodville Croquet ClubAir W. A. Lyon, solicitor, requested | the council to take over the club’s property in Ormond Street and hold it in trust for all time as a croquetgreen for the residents of Woodville. It was mentioned that the club was not an incorporated society and the present system of holding the proprietorship of the land by trustees was not altogether satisfactory. It- was hoped the council would sec its way to take over the land and hold it in a similar manner to the bowling green. A deed of trust would have to be drawn up and the council’s taking over would be subject to this proving satisfactory to it.—The said he saw no reason why the council should not take over the property as requested hut in view of the possibility of there being an obstacle to the transaction, lie suggested that the matter be held over until the town clerk had had the opportunity of making inquiries and reporting back to the council. It was left to the works and finance committee to act along the lines_ of the Alayor’s suggestion. The AYoodville Hockey Club applied for the use ol j the Recreation Ground on alternate Saturdays, the days on which it was to be used to be decided by mutual agreement with the Ilugbv football Club.—The application was granted on the same terms as last year. The acting-foreman (Air G. Hardy) reported on work done during the month. The town clerk reported that receipts totalled £lß9l 6s 3d and expenditure £1353 15s lOd ; the credit balance was £537 10s sd. The gas manager (Air H. Petterson) reported on the work completed in the past financial year. The report- for Alarch gave expenditure as £lO3 9s and earnings £99 16s.—Aloving the adoption pf the officers’ reports, Cr Galbraith said the gas manager was to be complimented on the considerable improvement effected in the gas supply. AA ith the object of improving the appearance of the public library frontage. Cr Hustwick moved that a rock fence be erected across the front of tile section. The motion was seconded by Cr Harding and carried. Cr Olsson drew attention to the fact that handrails erected on the Alangapapa bridge to replace those damaged as the result of a recent motor accident liad not been painted. It would be of advantage to night motorists to have them painted white.—The matter is to receive attention.
