GOOD RATE PAYMENTS.
MAIvERUA DRAINAGE BOARD. A good position in the payment of rates was reported at the meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board, yesterday, when it was revealed that a highly satisfactory percentage had been collected. The total amount struck for the year was £12,426 15s 2d, and the amount paid to date was £11,693 6s Id, leaving £733 9s Id outstanding. This represented a collection of 94.09 per cent. The total rates paid at the corresponding date during, the three previous .years were:—l939-40, £14.968 4s lOd ; 1938-39, £14,544 3s sd; 19371938, £13,037 14s sd. Of rates unpaid for the previous years, £4533. 15s was outstanding a year ago. Since then £3274 18s 9d had been collected, leaving £1258 16s 3d outstanding to date Pleasure at the financial position was expressed when the balance-sheet for _ the year was received, duly audited. Application for labour under the No. 13 scheme was left to the engineer and the clerk. The clerk was authorised to apply for an overdraft limit of £9OOO for the ensuing financial year. The estimates will be considered at the next meeting. It was decided to defer to the next meeting consideration of any action to recover outstanding rates.
