LAND DRAINAGE

MAKERUA BOARD. The M&kerua Drainage Board met yesterday. Those present were Messrs H. Seifert (chairman), H. Alexander, H. Sanies, G. Larsen, G. T. W. Cli 1 - ford, \V. Jackson and J. D. Aitchison, The financial statement allowed a credit balance at the bank on April 11 of £2498 4s Od. The overdraft at the April meeting in 1939 was £361 1(1= 4d, and in 1938 £1625 3s Id. The chairman and Trustees Aitchison and Larsen reported on their interview with Messrs A. J. Carson, E. Henderson and representatives of the Akers .Estate concerning an alternative outlet to the river in Mr Carson’s property. It was said that Mr Carson seemed agreeable to the proposal, but would obtain legal advice first. It was left to the same committee to deal with any further developments in the matter. The letting of 12 drain contracts, as reported by the drain contract committee, was confirmed. The following motion was carried: “That Mr A. L. Seifert be advised that the board will construct a new floodgate at the proposed outlet to the boundary drain Proposed to be constructed bv the settlers under the 41J scheme, and also will deepen the old Main Hp-iin to a point about 20 chains beyond the Campbell lload drain, providing the new boundary drain is connected to Akers’s drain, and also provided that the board obtains 100 per cent, subsidised labour for both works, including the floodgate; and, further, that the width of the boundary drain connecting to Akers’s drain be not less than four feet throughout, with the usual battens; and that no responsibility be accepted by the board for the maintenance of the proposed new boundary drain.

The overseer (Mr P. Y. Tucker) reported that the protection of Kciiyi's bend had been completed. The cleaning of the intersecting channel was in progress, among other works.
