ATHLETICS IN SYDNEY.
EMPIRE GAMES TRIALS. RECORDS BROKEN. SYDNEY, Jan. 30. Australian records were broken yesterday at the final competitive trials for the Empire Games athletes. The South African, Fouclie, with 49ft 9Jin, broke tho record for the shot put. Sutherland (Canada) added 18ft s§in to the previous best for the hammer throw of 145 ft 2jjin. Alumford (Australia), Hampson (Australia) and Haley (Canada) broke lOseo in the 100yds event. Quinn (New Zealand) was timed at 21 9-lOsec, only' 4-5 of a second outside the Australian record for 220 yds. In this event Short (South Africa) registered 22 l-10sec and Holmes (England) 22 3-10 sec. All runners eased up towards the finish except Quinn, who seemed to be striding at his top over the last 40yds. Southerland (Canada) broke the Australian hammer throw record, registering 165 ft Bin. Handley (England) broke the New South Wales record for 880yds, taking lmin 55 l-ssec, reducing the record by 7sec. The Australian record is lmin 55sec. Leckie, in the hammer throw, reached 148 ft lin. Boot covered 880yds in lmin 56 1-10 sec. Three New Zealand girls participated in the invitation handicaps, the fourth division of which resulted : Aliss Lumley (scr.) 1, Miss Tong (3yds) 2, Aliss Strachan (scr.) 3. All are New Zealanders. Time, llljsec. In the final trials. Coy (Canada) threw the discus 146 ft 2in, setting a record. Courtwright (Canada) threw the javelin 198 ft 7in, a New South Wales record. Duplessis, in a polevault, cleared 13ft 4in, a recoi^l. Dickinson (New South Wales), in the broad jump, smashed the Australian record, with a jump of 24ft 6£in. Matthews (New Zealand) covered four miles in 19niin 37sec, breaking another State record.
