NANETTE NOTICES

HERE AND THERE. (By “Nanette.”) Glamour and Novelty. The New Year of fashion comes in on a glamorous note. Glamour allied with novelty predominates evening fashions. In Paris, smart women are wearing coloured stockings for the evening—green, wine red, grey. Embroidery and sequin bangles bedeck the fronts of stockings. Evening gloves with each linger of a different colour and the backs covered with sequins up to the wrist are also worn. Upen sandals through which multi-coloured toes appear have invaded Paris dance floors. One woman was seen with toes on one foot painted green, mustard, purple, blue, and orange, and on the other ruby, el.ierald, amber, sapphire, and ebony. Playing the Game. “I notice Mrs has taken up croquet,” remarked a woman to her friend. “Yes,” was the reply, “she has always wanted to play but was prevented by her rheumatism. Now she has had treatment at the Turkish Baths in the Regent Arcade she feels well enough to tackle it and is ever so pleased.” The Skirt Question. The skirt revolution is hanging fire. Skirts in the latest notes are reported t-i be not one wliit shorter by day, and if anything longer... No shorter than to the instep for evening. One of the Lucky Ones. There is a worthwhile bargain at the Scotcli Wool and Hosiery Shop, Ltd., of pure silk fully-fashioiied sheer weight stockings. These have been so popular .that there are only four dozen pairs in stock and at the reasonable price—3s lid pair—will soon go also. Don’t hesitate but be one of the lucky ones. The Culinary Art. An advertisement appeared recently in a leading London paper. It was for a governess and a cook in a big house in Mayfair. There were 70 applications for the post of governess and only two for that of cook. The Board of Education’s decision to launch a nation-wide campaign to create better housewives —and better cooks—seems therefore to come at ail opportune moment. As a beginning, tlie board plans to look into and overhaul the teaching of domestic subjects in elementary schools, with special attention to cooking. In many schools, apparently, cooking is either very badly taught or not taught at all.

A committee under the chairmanship of Mrs E. M. Lowe has been formed to look into the subjects taught, the methods used, the accommodation and equipment available, the qualifications of the teachers, and the arrangements for the provision of cooking materials and for the disposal of _the things actually cooked in class. School Reopens. Now that the vacation is over, the well-known Broadway School of Dancing is again open. The principal, Miss Owen Gibbs, may be interviewed at the studio by parents or prospective pupils. As the new term for all the popular children’s classes commences this week application for further particulars should be made without delay. Fine Feathers. Ostrich leathers are stressed for autumn and early winter millinery. For afternou wear, uncurled feathers are used for toques and for trimming on brimmed models. Curled tips, in graded colours, are worked into charming diadem effects for evening wear. A Special Line. While in Hutchins’s Furniture Warehouse “Nanette” noticed and took an immense liking to a number of silk Marcella bedspreads in attractive bedroom colours. She was told that there were only a limited number of this special line, and that the full single and double sizes were priced at 25s and 355. Visitors to the Esplanade. Visitors thronged the Esplanade on Sunday, enjoying to the full, in the bea'utiful surroundings, the delightful summer weather. During the afternoon, when the majority were gathered near the rotunda to hear the band music, “Nanette” was admiring the flowering gum trees, which were looking particularly attractive with their clusters of gum-nuts and vivid pink and flame flowers. Suddenly the clear call of a tui rang out and the lovely bird could be seen perched on a low branch, quite unperturbed by the crowds and the preliminary “tuningup” of the bag-pipes close at hand. “If Winter Comes.” With the cold snap of last week bringing thoughts of the cooler days approaching, a friend of “Nanette” decided to trade in liis open car for a sedan. He found the one lie wanted at Fowler Motors, Ltd., and says he is satisfied that ho got tlie best car in town for the money. * Coming Colours. A word about coming colours. “Lipstick red’ is a particularly pleasing shade and more like natural lips than its name implies. “Turf green” is a fresh, delightful colour, “sunglint” has the glow of sunset gold, and “rusty” is another glowing, warm shade, with a hint of red in it. Brown will be seen a Jot in 1938, both in dresses and suits, hats, stockings, and accessories. Fuchsia tones and woollens in dark blues and greens will be in the forefront for the first months of the year. Irresistible. Half-way through the shopping list Mrs began to look longingly at the cool Itoyale Dutch Lounge. “I’ll pop in here for an ice-cream sundae while you go on ahead,” she said to her daughter. “Oh, no,” retorted Miss firmly, “I can’t resist the Itoyale Dutch any more than you can.” *
