TUNNEL UNDERTAKING.
CONNECTION UNDER THAMES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Jan. 29. After only one year’s preliminary work in connection with the construction of tlie__ Dartford-Purfleet Thames tunnel, shafts have now been sunk on the Kent side to a depth of 90 ft. and- on the Essex side to 70ft. This week the boring of the pilot tunnel has begun on the Essex side. It is expected that tunnellers from both banks will meet underneath the middle of the river bv September. It is estimated that 25,000 tons of earth will he excavated from the Dartford tunnel, and this will be used to raise the level of the approach roads, make earth embankments and flood banks. The tunnel is the biggest job, on the Thames since the construction of the Rotherhithe tunnel 30 years ago, and it is the first Thames tunnel to be sponsored by the Government. It is estimated to cost £3,500,000.
