MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. INTER-CLUB MATCHES. Fast wickets, warm sunshine and a cooling breeze made for excellent conditions for the continuation of the Manawatu Cricket Association’s interclub competitions on Saturday. High School defaulted to City in the senior A grade, the other two matches in that section being at the Sportsground. Palmerston dismissed Old Boys for 48 runs and then put on 215 for three wickets. Y.M.C.A. made 175 against United, and at the close of the day the latter had 109 runs in hand with two wickets lost. One match having been concluded on the opening day, two games only figured in the senior B section. Kia Toa gained an eight-point win over Y.M.C.A.. and Old Bovs also had an eight-point win, at the expense of United. An outright win was scored by Old Boys over Optimists in the junior A grade. Massey College beat Combined Services by a margin of three wickets, and United beat H. L. Young’s decisively to gain their first victory this season. Of the junior B matches the winners were Cook’s and Kia Toa. Y.M.C.A. won by default from High School. THE HONOURS BOARD. SENIOR A.
SENiOK a. PALMERSTON v OLD BOYS. PRITCHARD’S FINE BOWLING. Old Boys’ collapse for 48 runs in about two hours’ batting came as _ a surprise, even in face of the bowling of Pritchard and Downes. With no match as a team since before Christmas, the Old Boys' batsmen took the crease somewhat out of practice, and it was their misfortune under those circumstances —in addition to losing the toss—to meet Pritchard at the top of his form. The wind assisted Pritchard and he was keeping the ball at an excellent length. The pitch was also fairly fast. At one stage lie had an average of five wickets for six runs off five overs, and he bowled only eight overs in all for six wickets and 22 runs. Downes, who sent down nine overs (one maiden) also gave an excellent display. His bowling was steady and of a good length. The fall of wickets read: 4,4, 13, 14, 15, 30, 30, 30, 47, 48.
Palmerston then went in to put on 215 runs, for 3 wickets at stumps. Robertson and M. Ongley were the opening pair and were together until 134 ■runs were in the score book. Ongley was eventually caught at first slip off a ball from O’Keefe at 52 (including five boundaries). Pritchard’s characteristic innings read 4,6, 4,1, the six coming off O’Keefe (medium fast), straight over the bowler’s head. He was caught at square leg by Campbell off Waters. Robertson, who was batting confidently, gave one very difficult chance in the slips when his score was well advanced, while there was a possible catch at square leg later. He opened his account with a brisk display for an opening batsman, but when his century was in the offing the runs became more difficult to secure and from 85 onwards he was at the wickets for 20 minutes for only three singles. With his score at 99 Robertson hit a boundary to better his previous highest effort this season of 101 (also against Old Boys) and at stumps he was unbeaten with 113 runs to his credit. He hit 16 fours. Jennings was unlucky in not having Robertson caught ad howled at the final figure. J. Ongley was batting well for 20, until Gallichan took a catch in the slips to dismiss him. Hatch was the top scorer with 46. He was fifth man in and his was the ninth wicket to fall; he got one six and two fours. Edlin and G. Cameron were the opening pair and had 35 runs on before Cameron was dismissed. Murchison did not score and Edlin was the third man to go out, his wicket falling at 59. W. Cameron and Hatch then adva.nced the total to 106. Another good partnership was seen in the association of Edwards and Hatch, the pair carrying the total -from 138 to 175. Hatch lifted the hall into the covers off the faster bowlers, Cookery and Anderson, and his six, off bone, was over the bowler’s bead. He was playing more steadily than usual, but showed a tendency to lift the ball in driving. Edwards’s 23 was scored mainly in singles and twos, but his effort was a valuable one, coming late in the innings. Anderson, whose average was five for 43, bowled Murchison and Jolly with yorkers, the other wic-
kets being gained more with pace than anything else. United had, 109 runs on at stumps with but two wickets lost. S. Cutler reached the boundary ten times in 56 runs (four of the boundary shots being in succession), and Cockery’s total was 32 not out at the close of the day’s play. Details:—: Y.M.C.A.
