CRITICAL INJURIES
MISHAP AT PICNIC. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 30. A serious accident and subsequently a long and difficult trek with a critically injured mail to a waiting ambulance, terminated a picnic party near the Purewa Stream, which flows into Hobson Bay, on Saturday afternoon. A fractured spine and severe internal and head injuries were received by Herbert Olsen, Remuera, aged 19, married, employed as a Post and Telegraph
Department linesman,. when he dived into the Purewa Stream and struck a lock. The accident was seen by several of his companions, who brought the injured man to the embankment. After the stretcher-bearers had followed a long' and devious route through the Orakei basin and along the railway line for some distance, the injured man was attended. Then followed the arduous journey back to the ambulance. This took nearly two hours, as the injured man wa6 in such a serious condition that every care had to be taken by the stretcher bearers, while the necessity of climbing and descending numerous embankments, negotiating fences and crossing streams added to the party’s difficulties.
