EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 31, 1908. Foxton Beach had been becoming more and more popular as a holiday resort. There had been no fewer than 20 families in temporary resithere. ; A shortage of water in Palmerston North had been causing considerable concern and every effort had been made to conserve the supply. The use of the water carts had been stopped and the dust nuisance had caused much inconvenience in the business area. At the Horowhenua Show the entries had totalled 430. There had been 2724 Chinese, including 59 females, in New Zealand oil December 31, 1907. Australia had won the fourth Cricket Test and the “Ashes” from England. Australia’s scores had been 214 and 385, while England had made 105 and 186. Armstrong (133, not out) had been top scorer. There had been a possibility of the Governor taking up residence in Palmerston North for two years while Government House was in use for Parliamentary sessions. The telephone had been becoming increasingly popular. There had been 490 subscribers to the Palmerston North exchange.
