HARD LABOUR.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 28.

A constable on duty in Taranaki Street East on Friday last noticed a man behind a car that had been damaged by fire and saw him lift the door of the luggage compartment and remove a wicker basket. The constable intervened. The man was charged to-day with the theft of a basket and contents to a total value of £1 16s 6d, the property of John Henry Meyer. Meyer stated that his car was damaged by fire and he had had it removed to a parking place in Taranaki Street. Accused vainly asserted that he was inspecting the damage and was sentenced to six weeks’ hard labour.
