FIGURES FOR BOTH SIDES. JAPANESE LEADER’S APPEAL. TURNED DOWN AT TQKIO. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 28, 8.5 a.m. TOKIO, Jan. 27. The naval spokesman (Rear-Admiral Noda) stated to-day that since tho outbreak of the war and up to January 25 losses of Chinese ’planes had been 259 in the air and 356 on the ground and the Japanese 18 and 71, respectively. He reiterated that they had no intention of occupying Hainan Island. It is reported that Tokio has turned down General Matsui’s appeal for more troops because: “No troops can bo spared in view of other possible contingencies.” Tokio is also reported to be demanding an explanation of the hold-up.
