PARADE OF BANDSMEN
COMPETITIONS COMMENCE. SYDNEY, Jan. 27. Although the chief pageant marking the anniversary celebrations has passed, the festivities will continue until April 25. , . , . , The weather was unkvnd tor to--day’s parade of bandsmen of 18 bands through the city. Great crowds were disappointed when a storm interrupted it. Band competitions, however, began in the evening. An Anglican thanksgiving service was held to-night on the harbour. About 7000 people cruised in the hve largest ferries and participated in a service conducted by the Archbishop of Sydney (Dr. Mowll). Proceedings were broadcast and amplified by loudspeakers. , The Celebrations Committee to-day decided that it would be inadvisable to re-enact the landing of Governor Philip or to repeat yesterday s pageant of the March to Nationhood, as had previously been decided. . Considerable adverse comment is appearing in the Press because the Australian athletes in yesterday s procession of Empire Games competitors were attired in civilian clothes llio concensus of opinion is that they should have been fitted out, in the regulation blazers and hats after t.ie manner of visiting competitors. Mr W E Parry (New Zealand Minister of' Internal Affairs) visited the athletes’ village and met the New Zealand Games team this afternoon, lie spent some time with them and learned that they were perfectly comfortable. Happy speeches were made in which good wishes were exchanged with the team manager. Yesterday* s casualties totalled 0040. AUSTRALIA v. EMPIRE. RAIN STOPS PLAY.
Received January 28, 8.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 27. A match between the Australian States and teams representing the rest of the Empire was begun at Rockdale, but was stopped by the ram after about nine heads had been played. A Fiji rink, comprising Benkamin, Bourke, Lindsay and McLean, was at that stage up 9—4 against a New Zealand rink comprising Nicliol, Cumming, Bray, and Robinson (skip).
