GALES IN TASMAN.

SHIPPING BUFFETED. NO WORD OF YACHT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 27.. Delayed two days in her voyage from Melbourne by gales in the Tasman Sea, the Union Company’s steamer Omana berthed at Auckland this morning. Exceptionally rough conditions from the south ruled on Friday and continued over the week-end, reported her master Captain Collins, who stated that had the Auckland yacht, Aurora Star, the remaining competitor in the race to Hobart, reached the central Tasman in that period she would have had a difficult experience. The captain 6aid that numbers of ships were at sea during the gale and all advised that they were meeting adverse weather. The gale was a few points abaft the beam of the Omana, which made matters easier for the 6teamer, but her decks were frequently awash. As the Aurora Star was at Cape Maria,Van Diemen on Friday Captain Collins considered she may have missed some of the more severe weather ruling in the central Tasman. No sign was seen of the yacht, which lias not now been spoken for a week. Picked up by the Omana on Tuesday night, a Sydney radio report gave an adverse weather forecast from the Government Meteorologist, who advised the yachts in the Anckland-Hobart race to return to New Zealand.

No further attempt to cro6s the Tasman will be made by the crew of the yacht Wayfarer, one of the two competitors in the ocean race to HSbart, which returned to Whangaroa on Wednesday. Speaking on the telephone tonight, the skipper (Mr K. Reid) said the yacht would be brought back to Auckland in about three or four days’ time. Repairs were being made to the damaged rudder and to other parts of the vessel that had suffered during the storm. All the crew were well and were grateful for the hospitality extended to them by the people of Whangaroa.
