A remit proposing an approach to the Government was submitted by the Canterbury District Council, whose executive suggested that, in the cutting up of old estates, many historic trees were destroyed which could easily have been preserved. The following remits affecting native bush were adopted:— “That the Government he requested to include in the Native Plants Protection Act. 1934, a clause preventing the decoration of streets, halls, etc., contrary to the Act” ; “that the Police Department be requested not to re: lax its vigilance on the provisions or the Native Plants Protection Act ; “that congratulations he extended to the Minister of Lauds on the appointment of an Inspector of Scenic Reserves for each island”; “that the Government’s attention be drawn to the desirability of preventing the planting of willows, poplars, and other exotics in the construction or. maintenance of roads within the limits of scenic reserves of native bush.” The conference carried a further resolution that the attention of the appropriate authorities he directed to the desirability of having greater care exercised in the cutting back or destruction of trees adjacent to telegraph, telephone, or high tension wires.
