THE SPAN OF YEARS.
INTERESTING GREETINGS. EARLY MILITARY DAYS. One of the most interesting incidents connected with the visit of the mechanised army convoy to Palmerston North yesterday afternoon was a request by Major F. Garner ,that the commanding officer of the convoy, Major G. H. Clifton, M.C., N.Z.S.C . should convey Major Garner’s greetings to his father. Major Clifton was exceedingly pleased to renew such an association, for Major Garner was the commanding officer of Major Clifton’s father (Major C. E. Clifton, - of Porangahau) when the latter was a member of the Napier Rifles, long before the beginning of this century. Major Garner was then the officer commanding the district.. Major C. E. Clifton saw service with the Wellington Mounted Rifles and was also on Gallipoli and in France. Major G. H. Clifton holds the honour of having won the Bertrand Stewart essay in open competition with members of the British Army. Major Clifton saw service on the Frontier m India, in 1920, and it was there that he won the Military Cress. He won the coveted essay prize in 1935.
