BRILLIANT DISPLAY.
NIGHT TURNS TO DAY,
Received January 27. 11.15 a.m. LONDON. Jan. 20.
The most brilliant display of the Aurora Borealis for many years was seen in England and many parts of the Continent to-night. It appeared soon after sunset and continued for several hours. The phenomenon, which is attributed to the sunspot which appeared on January 19, interrupted the beam wireless to Australia and caused havoc to the cables. It also caused panic in many parts of Europe, where such a spectacle is unknown within memory.
Austrian villagers fell on their knees and prayed when night turned to day with a flaming coloured curtain across the sky. The peaks of the Swiss Alps were lit up in magnificent colours.
Brilliant displays of the Aurora Australis were visible in parts of New Zealand on Friday and Saturday night of last week.
