TWO NEW YEARLINGS.
YOUNGSTERS AT AWAPUNI. TO BE BROKEN IN. (By “Spectator.”) Two yearlings are to bo broken in at Awapuni during the next fow woeks for tho Palmerston North sportsman Mr C. W. Boyd. The first is a filly by Inflation from Spcarform, and the second is a colt by Lord Qucx from Seamstress. Purchased at tho Trenthnm yoarling sale last week, the Lord Qucx colt is tho second of the. progeny of Seamstress, who is by Catmint out of the imported Slipstitch. It is understood that his dam’s first foal has not yet raced. The colt, is a racy looking sort, a typical Lord Quox, and appears likely to be speedy.
Baldric to Resume. Baldric, who has boon off the track owing to contracting a cold, is to resume work at Awapuni very shortly. Though six years old, this gelding, who is by Martarma out of Lifo, and a three-quarter brother to Martara, has not yet raced. Life is by Gay Lad out of Flower of the West. Martara is by Martarma out of Taraheke, by Paladin, out of Flower of the West.
Tidewaiter Spelling. Tidowaiter, who likes the going easy, is out for a spell until tho late autumn, when track conditions should bo to the liking of the Tidal horse, who has freshened up nicoly since being thrown out of active work.
Father and Son. Although not at the samo meeting, a father and son both rode winners on Saturday last. It was tho first such occurrence in recent Now Zealand; racing history. The successful pair were Tom Chaplin, the veteran Auckland jockey, who won on High Delight at Thames, and his son Jack, who scored on Wildflower in tho Ashhurst Cup. Many years ago the father was a prominent Auckland horseman, both on the fiat and over hurdles, but he gets only a very occasional mount those days. Jack Chaplin is apprenticed to. G. W. New at Awapuni and is giving considerable promise, having ridden several winners of late. He is engaged at Paliiatua.
Rona Bay’s Success. Though she failed when brought down for tho Manawatu meeting at Christmas, tho Thames success of Rona Bay in the Goldfields Cup was full of merit, as she was one of the pacemakers throughout and battled on very' gamely under pressure. She was produced in first-rate condition by R. Martin, for whom she has won on three occasions during the present term. Providing Rona Bay retains her present form more wins should come her way before the country meetings are over.
An Encouraging Start. Mungacro, with but little previous experience, won the hurdle race each day at Thames. On tho first day his fencing was a bit patchy, but he jumped much better on tne second day, and taken nil round his form was encouraging for a beginner. Mungacro has an abundance of speed, and summed up on his efforts at Thames ho is likoly to extend his record in the new department. Taitoru Back Home. After a brief stay in H. Gray’s stable, Taitoru is back at Pihama. being trained by his ownor, Mr G. Bayliss. Iron horse though he is, Taitoru at. last appears to be feeling tho effects of his strenuous programme, for ho has been racing since the commencement of last season with hardly a respite. At tho same time he is such a remarkably well cohstitutioned gelding that he may yet freshen up sufficiently to again confound critics over the Taranaki circuit.
Lovelilt Promising. Re-entering the ranks of owners a little over twelve months ago, Mr A. B. Williams was not long in getting on the winning list through the success of Kindheart in the Champion Hack Handicap at Awapuni, but the son of Philamor wont wrong and has not started since. Mr Williams appears to have another proitiising sort in Lovelilt, a four-vcar-old daughter of Mimetio, who ran twice unplaced last season, and had started four times for two placed performances before scoring her first success in the January Handicap on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting, though she has since failed at Trcntham. The dam of Lovelilt, is Humoresque, who was bred by Mr K. S. Williams, the breeder of Lovelilt, in 1923, and is by imported Prince Willonyx from Barcarole by Martian from Grand Opera.
New Sire Shipped. The thoroughbred stallion Air Standfast (by Buchan from Cinna, dam of Gay' Shield and Beau Pore)., recently purchased for use as a siro in the Tc Awamutu district, was shipped from England on Thursday last, and is due to arrivo in the Dominion early in March.
