SHANNON
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Jan. 26. At a special meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, Saturday as the statutory half-holiday was agreed upon. A building permit for the erection of a cottage by the Palmerston North Hospital Board for the District Nurse at Shannon was granted. The Chief Librarian, Wellington, advised the council that ha would, in company with Mr G. T. Alley (director of the newly instituted Government country library service), which is the first step in the Government’s programme of making books available even in the remotest districts of New Zealand, visit Shannon on February 10. This is part of a programme by which the librarians in charge of the four main centres are to cover the whole of the Dominion. Wellington is to undertake libraries in the southern part of the North Island. The visit was foi the purpose of giving advice and stimulation to library committees and librarians.
An informal social afternoon was enjoyed by a good attendance of members at the January meeting of the Shannon Women’s Institute on Wednesday afternoon.
Air and Airs Clayton have returned after an enjoyable fortnight in Auckland. At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening Cr , Roach was granted a further one month’s leave of absence. Airs A. R. Blackwood received word on Saturday of the sudden death of her sister, Airs Pasley, Invercargill, and immediately left for the south.
