REARMING OF BATTLESHIPS

COUNTER TO JAPAN’S MOVE. LONDON, Jan. 11. Mr H. C. Bywater, the naval correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, says that proposals have been made that the battleship Iron Duke, now a noncombatant training ship, should be rearmed and modernised. This would help to compensate for the rearming of the battleship Hiei by Japan. Both the Hiei and the Iron Duke were demilitarised in accordance with the London Naval Treaty.

The rearming of the Hiei, a battleship of 29,000 tons, completed in 1914, and originally armed with eight 14in. guns, was begun last year. The Iron Duke (26,000 tons), which was Admiral Jellicoe’s flagship at Jutland, was completed in 1912, and was originally armed with 13.5 in. guns.
