WHIROKINO HIGHWAY.
CONSTRUCTION OF RAMPS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Jan. 26. Good progress is being made with the construction of the ramp or causeway to lift 57j chains of tho No. 1 main highway at Whirokino above flood level. The steam hammer for sinking the piles has now been shifted further towards the bridge as' the first batch of piles have been sunk. The work started at the Main Drain and will proceed south until the bridge is reached. At first the contractor was handicapped owing to a shortage of steel, but it is understood that this difficulty has now been overcome. The work of construction of a new bridge over the Manawatu River to replace the existing Whirokino bridge has not yet been commenced, and it is not anticipated that it will be completed before 1940. The ramp, however will be finished before that date and will be made available to traffic immediately, the old bridge being used in the meantime. _ The contractors have been fortunate in not experiencing any flooding since starting the WO rk. Yesterday a flood threatened as a result of the heavy rain up-country, and men were engaged in sand-bagging the low spot on Mrs Robinson’s property. No water broke through.
