FIERCE FIGHTING
OPPOSITION IN ETHIOPIA. BIG LOSSES OF TROOPS. OFFICERS MASSACRED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 27, 11.10 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 26. The Abyssinian Legation in London has issued the following statement “Violent opposition fighting is going on in the north-north-west district of Abyssinia. Attempts of Italian flying motorised columns to recapture the lost positions have met, at the most, with only temporary success. Three battalions of Eritrean troops have deserted.
“A total of 5993 Italians and Askaris have been killed in engagements in the past two months. The Abyssinian losses are equally great. “The Abyssinians are masters of the situation in many districts.” The statement alleges that following the non-observance of certain pledges 18 Italian officers were massacred at Debra Markos, the capital of Gojjam Province. Thirty to forty Italian ’planes have since daily bombed towns and villages in the province as a reprisal.
