HIGH HONOUR.
CONFERRED ON DR H. H. ALLAN. SERVICE TO SCIENCE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 27. In addition to Dr W. R. B. Oliver, director of the Dominion Museum, the honour of corresponding membership of the Swedish Phytogeographicnl Society has fallen to Dr H. H. Allan, F.L.S., director of the botany section of the Plant Research Bureau, Wellington. ' Both were elected at;the same meeting. The honours were awarded because of their published researches into the geology of New Zealand vegetation and as recognition of the valuable assistance they gave the president of the society on his visit in 1927. Dr Allan has learnt Swedish to keep in touch with Scandinavian botany and hopes to attend the International Botanical Congress at Stockholm, in 1940.
Dr Allan, who before his transfer to Auckland was systematic botanist at the Plant Research Station, Palmerston North, has enjoyed a distinguished career. He has published papers in various scientific journals in New Zealand, England, and America on botanical subjects.
Dr Allan was born at Nelson in 1882, being educated at Nelson College and later Auckland University College, subsequently securing his M.A. and D.Sc. degrees. Early in liis career lie was English master at the Waitaki High School, agriculture master at the Ashburton High School, and English, master at the Feilding High School.
