POPULAR OFFICER.
EX-POLICE COMMISSIONER DEATH OF MR A. H. WRIGHT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON: Jan. 27. The death occurred suddenly yesterday afternoon of Mr Arthur Hobbins Wright, former Commissioner of Police. Mr Wright, who was aged. 76, had been living in retirement since 1925. He succeeded Mr O’Donovan as commissioner in 1922.
Mr Wright was born at Gloucester (England) and joined the Police Force at Invercargill in 1882. He spent years in the recording side of the service and became a sergeant in 1898 and a sub-inspector in 1906. When he became chief clerk of the department he remained at the head office till 1911, when he' became an inspector and was place'd in charge of the Thames district. The administration was changed to Hamilton in 1913 and he remained there till 1915, when he went to Dunedin as superintendent. From 1919 to 1922 he was in charge of the district. Mr Wright is survived by his wife, five sons, and four daughters. GREAT ADMINISTRATOR. A striking tribute to the late Mr Wright was paid by Inspector Cummings, officer in charge of _ the Palmerston North police district, in an interview with the “Standard” this morning. “Mr Wright was the greatest administrator we have ever had or are likely to have,” stated the inspector. “He was a fine type of Englishman and was very popular throughout the force.”
Mr Wright was not stationed at Palmerston North during his period of service.
